Right Group Condemns Battambang Authorities for Clash with Residents
Cambodia (Kohker) - A
local rights group on Friday condemned Battambang provincial authorities for clashing
with residents who attempted to take part in a forum on the election process a
day before.
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) said in a statement that the authorities “cracked down” on the forum, preventing participants from entering the private house where it was held and claiming that the forum was illegal, as the organizer had not obtained permission.
But the CCHR claimed that “no such authorization for the organization of public trainings and forums is required under Cambodian law” and called the authorities’ action “violation of the right of Cambodian citizens to freedom of assembly.”
The forum was organized by the Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) with speakers from the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) including senior CNRP official Ms Mu Sochua, regarding Cambodia's pre and post election process. A clash between the local police and some residents including Ms. Mu Sochau broke out after the latter attempted to push through the police line to attend the forum. No serious injuries were reported.
Ms.
Mu Sochua had accused the authorities of assaulted her and of bowing to
pressure from the CPP to intimidate the residents into staying away from the
forum, but the authorities denied the allegations.
