Kenya’s Main International Airport Shuts Down After Fire(Video)
A massive fire shut down Nairobi’s Kenyatta International
Airport on Wednesday, causing extensive damage and a potentially huge toll on
Kenya’s tourism and commerce. Passengers and staff at the Airport were
evacuated and flights diverted to other cities.
Arrivals and immigration are totally damaged and the airport
has been closed down. Firefighters battled the blaze for about five hours
before it was contained. The fire was detected at about 5 a.m. during a busy
time for traffic at the airport. Part of the duty-free area had been demolished
for construction last week, but the cause of the blaze was not known.
The airport has the capacity to handle 200,000 metric tons
of cargo annually, including farm goods worth about $3.6million aday.
