Opposition leader Mr. Sam Rainsy asks UN Secretary General to send observers
Cambodia- Mr. Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, has written a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, asking him to send experts as observers the valuation process of the results of the July 28 general election.“I am writing to request that the United Nations, under your leadership, dispatch expert(s) as observer(s) to the process to be undertaken by a joint committee to evaluate the validity of the results of the national election in the Kingdom of Cambodia, as publicized by the National Election Committee (NEC), “ Sam Rainsy wrote in the letter dated August 5, 2013.
“As you may be aware, the Cambodian national Rescue Party
(CNRP), international and local organization with expertise in election
monitoring have seriously and openly rejected and questioned the NEC figures as
reflecting a process that does not meet the necessary test of ‘free and fair.’
We believe that numerous irregularities in electoral processes produced an
outcome that does not properly reflect the will of the people,” he added.
Recently, the CNRP leaders have demanded that a joint
technical commission comprising representatives from the ruling CPP, CNRP,
local civil society groups, and national and international observers, with the
United Nations acting as an arbitrator, be formed to investigation the election
irregularities; but their proposal was rejected.
