Cambodia - Interior Ministry warns opposition leader over demonstration
Minister of Interior Sar Kheng has written a letter to Mr.
Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP),
warning him that if he wants to hold a demonstration to protest the results of
the recent general election, he and the participants must respect the law on
peaceful demonstration,
“While visiting people in Phnom Penh capital and some
province recently, Your Excellency has called on the people to participate in a
demonstration to protest the result of the election of the fifth National
Assembly members… To hold a demonstration is the right of the citizens as
stipulated in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia, but the leader and
the participants must respect the law on peaceful demonstration,” Mr. Sar Kheng
wrote in the letter dated August 8, 2013.
“If the demonstration causes violence and destruction to the
national security, public and private properties and social orders, the leader
of the demonstration and the perpetrators will have to be responsible before
the law,” added the letter.
