NEC Announces Official Results of Election
The National Election Committee (NEC) released
the official results of the July 28 general election this morning, handing
victory to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Off the 123 seats in the National
Assembly, the CPP took 68 as its has expected, while the rest of 55 was given
to the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), according to the NEC’s
announcement made through the national media.
Eight political parties contested
in the 2013 General Election for the 5th Mandate of the National
Assembly, but only two of them, the CPP and CNRP, won enough votes to win the parliamentary
seats. However, the CNRP has rejected the election results, claiming the
election was full of “serious irregularities”.
On Saturday, the CNRP held a mass
demonstration in Phnom Penh with around twenty thousand participants to demand
an independent commission be formed to investigate and resolve the election
irregularities. The CNPR leaders also warned to continue to hold mass
demonstrations nationwide if the NEC announced the final results of the
election before an independent commission is formed to completely resolve the
election dispute.
The CNRP has just issued a press
statement informing representatives of the foreign embassies, human rights
organizations and the media that it would hold a press conference this
afternoon to express its position on the NEC’s announcement of the official
election results.
