Cambodian Confederation of Trade Unions Appeal to Workers to Remain Calm
Cambodia (Kohker) – Cambodian Confederation of Trade Unions
(CCTU) has issued an appeal to workers to remain calm, as the opposition Cambodia
National Rescue Party will hold a mass demonstration on Saturday, 7 September to
protest the results of the recent general election.
“With reference to a letter of the Ministry of Labour
and Vocational Training dated 2 September, the CCTU would like to inform its
board of governors and all members to remain calm and continue their respective
duties, and avoid being tricked by some politicians into participating in [demonstrations]
that would affect social orders and their own living,” read the CCTU’s appeal
dated 5 September 2013 and signed by its President Chuon Mom Thol.
The CCTU consists of board of governors from 17 trade
unions.
Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training on 2 September
issued a similar appeal to the workers, union leaders, employees and employers.
On the contrary, the Free
Trade Union of the Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC) this morning appealed
to its members to boycott overtime work on 7 September in order to demand the
National Election Committee and the Constitutional Council “provide justice” to
the voters, and the Kampong Speu Provincial Court release 8 jailed workers of
Sabrina Garment Factory.
