Cambodia Supports East Timor’s ASEAN Membership

(Kohker) – During a bilateral talk with visiting Prime Minister and Minister
for Defense and Security of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Mr. Kay
Rala Xanana Gusmao, at the Peace Palace yesterday evening, Cambodian Prime
Minister Samdech Hun Sen said that the
Royal Government of Cambodia would support the Timor-Leste’s full membership in
the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
In
the meeting, the two premiers praised the fruitful relations and cooperation,
between Cambodia and Timor-Leste, Mr. Ieng Sophalet, Assistant to the Cambodian
premier told reporters following the meeting.
Mr.
Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao informed his Cambodian counterpart that the purpose of his
visit was to strengthen the bilateral relations and cooperation and to seek
other potential sectors for future cooperation. Samdech Hun Sen praised
Timor-Leste for its economic growth despite the global financial crisis. He
requested the Timor-Leste side to look into possibilities to cooperate in other
fields, especially the rice field.
Following
the meeting, the two premiers witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of
Understanding on Technical, Commercial and Economic Cooperation between the
Kingdom of Cambodia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. The MOU was signed
by Cambodian Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh and visiting Timor-Leste Minister
of Tourism Francisco Kabualdi Lay.
Prime
Minister of Timor-Leste and his delegation are on a five-day official visit since
September 5, at the invitation of Cambodian Prime Minister. This morning, he
also paid a courtesy call on Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Heng
Samrin, who briefed him on Cambodia’s current situation.
Mr.
Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao will leave Phnom Penh on September 7 for Siem Reap
province, home to Angkor temples.
