CNRP Rejects Final Election Results, Announces Further Mass Protests
Cambodia (Kohker) -
Opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has rejected the official
results of the recent election as announced by the National Election Committee
(NEC) this morning.
“The CNRP does not recognize and does
not support the results of the election as announced this morning by the NEC,”
CNRP President Sam Rainsy said at a press conference this afternoon, “because
the results does not reflect the will of the people and are unfair for them. So
we still continue our protest in order to find the truth, especially to demand
the establishment of an independent commission to investigate and to find the
truth in order to render justice to the voters.”
The official results of the July 28 general election announced by the NEC this morning confirmed the victory of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party. The results showed that the CPP won 68 seats in the National Assembly, while the opposition CNRP got the remaining 55 seats. The opposition party has alleged that the election was full of “serious irregularities” and demanded an independent probe into them.
On Saturday, the CNRP held a mass
demonstration in Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park with around twenty thousand
participants to demand an independent commission be formed to investigate and
resolve the election irregularities.
CNRP vice-president Kem Soka told
reporters in the press conference that the CNRP would continue to hold another mass
nonviolent demonstration for three consecutive days, starting on 15, 16 and 17 September
to demand the establishment of such an independent commission. If after the
three-day demonstration, there is still no solution, the CNRP will continue its
protest further, he said.
