Cambodia (Kohker) – Opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has released a press statement saying its Permanent Committee decided in a meeting on 27 September to continue to demand justice for voters through various action plans, and calling on Cambodian people to attend them.

According to the CNRP’s press statement dated 28 September 2013, the opposition party’s Permanent Committee planned the following activities:
  1. A mass congress at [Phnom Penh’s] Freedom Park on the afternoon of 6 October 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in order to decide on the CNRP’s position;
  2. Making a petition to the UN and the signatory countries of the 23 October 1991 Paris Peace Accords;
  3. A mass demonstration at [Phnom Penh’s] Freedom Park on the afternoon of 23 October 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in order to present the petition to the United Nations and the signatory countries of the 23 October 2013 Paris Peace Accords through the United Nations’ Representative in Cambodia.
In a cabinet meeting on Thursday, reelected Prime Minister Hun Sen threatened to release an audio recording in which, he claimed, CNRP leader Sam Rainsy had acknowledged the ruling CPP won the July 28 general election during their recent meetings arming to end political deadlock. Hun Sen said he would release the recording if the opposition continued to hold demonstrations against the official results of the election.

The CNRP responded immediately, saying they had nothing to hide from the meetings held on 14 and 15 September and urged the ruling CPP to release the recording of the entire meetings without making any editing.

The CNRP has dismissed the official election results from the National Election Committee, in which Hun Sen's CPP won 68 seats against the CNRP's 55 seats, claiming the election was full of serious irregularities, and demanded an independent commission be formed to probe the election results; but Hun Sen said Thursday that during the meetings, Sam Rainsy abandoned the idea of an independent investigation, asking instead for his CNRP to hold the National Assembly’s presidential post, a request that was denied by the CPP.

Hun Sen added that the CNRP leader even expressed support for his role as prime minister in the Royal Government’s fifth mandate.
